A government university for Sri Aman, Sarawak. ~ Yusuf Mustanir's ...

The Sundaypost, dated 1 April 2012 reported that the state government of Sarawak plans to set up a university of technology in Sibu. It was mentioned by the Sarawak Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the 110th anniversary celebration of SMK Methodist, Sibu, Sarawak.

According to the Chief Minister, the university would produce graduates trained in technical fields to meet the manpower needs of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). He further mentioned that, the state would focus on technical education and training in view of the need for more trained manpower in technical fields. He also called on all quarters to cooperate with the state government to realise the establishment of the proposed university.

Honestly, I respect and support the suggestion of the Chief Minister of Sarawak. Nevertheless, I am still of the opinion that Sri Aman, the second division of Sarawak which is known as one of "the sleeping towns" of Sarawak should first get a university ( a government university). Comparing to other divisions of Sarawak, including Betong, Mukah and Samarahan, Sri Aman is very far behind economically. Betong is now having a technical school, Mukah is having a branch of UITM and Samarahan is having UNIMAS, UITM and Institut Perguruan.

A government university for Sri Aman must not BY PASS the Sri Aman's town. It must be in the town of Sri Aman. I think there are enough lands in Sri Aman to have a government university. If a government university is in Sri Aman, Sri Aman will sure be developed as best as Samarahan, Serdang and all other states in Malaysia having an institution of higher learning (IPTA NOT IPTS). At the moment, Sri Aman depends very much on its agricultural products and its yearly Benak festival to generate its economy. But if Sri Aman is having a government university, shops and supermarkets will mushrooming. People from over Malaysia will come to send their children to study in Sri Aman. More and more jobs will be created in Sri Aman. As Sri Aman is focusing on the agricultural products, that proposed government university of Sri Aman will sure be a research centre to produce a world class quality agricultural and poultry products including rice. When we can produce a world class quality agricultural and poultry products, we can be one of its chief exporters.

Hence, its a high time for Sri Aman to have a government university if we want to see Sri Aman to be economically developed. The Benak Festival does not contribute more income to Sri Aman but a fully government university is the best solution to develop Sri Aman which is the second division of Sarawak. Furthermore on October 1973, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Sri Aman (Simanggang) between the Chief Minister of Sarawak at that time, Datuk Abdul Rahman Yaakub (Tun) as the Chief Minister of Sarawak and the Director of Operation against the communist insurgency in Sarawak and Bong Kee Chok, Director of Political Commissar of PARAKU which finally ended the communist insurgency in Sarawak.
