SRI AMAN: The Sri Aman Tidal Bore Carnival, locally known as Pesta Benak, is a unique tourism product which can help boost Sri Aman as a famous tidal bore town not only nationwide but also globally, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.

He said the presence of international surfers proved that the Batang Lupar tidal bore could provide exciting adventure and experience to surfers as a fantastic extreme sport.

"I believe the Batang Lupar tidal bore is a tourism icon which has a very bright potential to be marketed worldwide, provided all quarters including the private sector and non-governmental organisations contribute positively including through active involvement," he said at the end of the three-day carnival here yesterday.

This year's carnival saw the participation of 10 surfers, comprising six international participants from France and England, three from Kuala Lumpur and one female surfer from Sri Aman.

The spectators who gathered by the river bank were also treated to thrills and spills from several experienced jet skiers riding their Waverunner jet skis on the Batang Lupar, besides racing with the benak waves.

As such, Jabu said, exciting events, including tidal bore surfing as well as regatta, food fair, culture and arts performances held to coincide with the natural phenomenon, would carve out a tourism niche.

He also called on the local community to grab the opportunity to generate income during such carnivals, adding: "Be smart in promoting and selling local products to the visitors to boost your socio-economic wellbeing."

All quarters should also work hand in hand to further promote the tourism industry in Sri Aman, in particular to realise the objectives of organising the Sri Aman Tidal Bore Carnival, he said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Deputy Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos urged academicians and universities to carry out scientific studies on the tidal bore phenomenon.

So far, he said, no detailed study on the phenomenon along the Batang Lupar had been carried out while written documents were insufficient to be used as reference for future generations.

Such efforts would enable the Batang Lupar tidal bore to be popularised among the world community, Dawos said.
