MATU: Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie has called on the Chinese community here to preserve and promote their distinctive culture and tradition so that the younger generation would not forget them.

The promotion of racial culture can enhance unity and harmony among Malaysians, consistent with the 1Malaysia concept, he said when opening Pesta Gee Sii Kong here on Monday. The festival, organised by the Chinese community here, was also attended by Matu District Officer Habari Bakar and Penghulu Teo Huat.

"The Chinese should be proud that their culture has been assimilated into the colourful Malaysian culture which is a catalyst for our unity, progress and prosperity," said Abu Seman, who is also a political secretary to the Chief Minister.

He called on the community to grab the huge business spin-offs brought about by Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and Tanjung Manis Halal Hub development initiatives.

"Businesses here (Matu) have almost reached the peak. As such, it is imperative that local businessmen, Bumi and non-Bumi, venture into industries in SCORE and Tanjung Manis Halal Hub where business opportunities are aplenty," he said.

Among the highlights of the festival were a  procession around the town, fireworks display and cultural show.
