PADAWAN: Armed forces (ATM) dominated The 2012 BHR Padawan Nature Challenge yesterday as their teams swept two of the top categories.

However, there was to be some controversies as several participants protested against the organisers for not disqualifying teams who did not follow the requirements.

A participant, who sportingly took his prize despite not finishing in the top four, said all teams should have holes punched to their tags at every checkpoint by the marshals.

"We took the trouble to have the hole punched to our tags, but some didn't and they should have returned to the checkpoints to get it done. Because the organisers allowed the results to stand, we view that it is bad for sportsmanship and should not be repeated," he said.

In the prestigious MPP Chairman Challenge Trophy, ATM representatives Jusery Gani and Muhaizar Mohamad from Team Sukan Lasak ATM won first place with the time of two hours, 54 minutes and 20 seconds.

This category involved 10km cycling from Kpg Annah Rais to BHR Plateau and followed by 15km trekking to Mount Penrissen and back to the BHR Plateau. Both Jusery and Muhaizar, who are based in the Peninsular, brought home RM4,000 cash prize and trophy.

Their colleagues Mohd Azuan Asmuni and Mohd Nazri Ahmad also of Team Sukan Lasak ATM finished second, after arriving 10 minutes later. Last year's winners Yamin Ali and Guianus Salagan from Team Amazing Borneo Sabah finished third.

In the Malta Penrissen Summit Trekking Challenge category which involved 15km trekking, reaching the finishing line first were Mohd Radhi Abu Hassan and Niatin Nujatin from Team Sukan Lasak ATM with the time of two hours, five minutes and 35 seconds.

They won RM 1,000 cash and medal. In second place were the Jeck Fashion team comprising Aswari Mustaffa and Abdul Hamri Mutalip while third were Jemey Asim and Rada Tanggei from Greens.

Sabahans Januin Johny and Mohd Farhan Mulyadi, who called themselves Anak Kampung Kinabalu Team, won the Magnum Batu Panggan Trekking Challenge (10km trekking) with the time of one hour, 33 minutes and 30 seconds.

Januin, 24, attached to the Youth and Sports Department here, attributed the win to their experience garnered participating in Kinabalu Climbathon. They won themselves RM800 cash and medals.

The Kalimantan View Trekking Challenge, a 10km trekking opened for ladies only, was won by a pair of 50-somethings Ung Yuk Hwa and Linda Ho who completed the challenge with the time of two hours and 12 minutes.

They also brought home prizes of RM800 cash and medals. Only eight lady teams participated in this category.

Prizes were presented by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang and BHR resort manager Zakaria Ismail. Also present were MPP deputy chairman Mohd Hashim Yap and organising chairman Lee Sin Fah.
