KUCHING, Sept 15 — Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah arrived here today to attend the 50th celebration of Sarawak's Independence in Malaysia.
The aircraft carrying the royal couple touched down at the Kuching International Airport at 11.30am.
Shortly upon arrival, the King and Queen were greeted by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Barieng and Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who is also the chairman of the organising
The royal couple were then introduced to the state dignitaries after which they were entertained to cultural performances.
While in the city, the King and Queen will observe the procession of decorated boats at the Kuching Waterfront tonight in conjunction with the 'Malam Gemilang 50 Tahun'.
Tuanku Abdul Halim and Tuanku Hajah Haminah are scheduled to attend the Malaysia Day Parade and Mammoth Rally at Padang Merdeka, here tomorrow morning.
In the afternoon, the royal couple will visit the 'Sarawak Gemilang 50 Tahun' exhibition at the Sarawak Tourism Complex.
Meanwhile, the programme for Tuanku Hajah Haminah will continue with a visit to the Orchid Garden near the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building at Petra Jaya.
Tomorrow night, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will officially open the Sarawak Islamic Complex at Jalan P Ramlee, here.
The royal couple are scheduled to participate in a golf event at the Sarawak Golf Club on Tuesday before returning to the federal capital in the afternoon.- BERNAMA
