CARING LEADER: Abu Seman (fourth left) hands over financial assistance to Abdul Aziz while Mukah Baitumal officer Osman Imbun and others look on.

SIBU: Matu is in urgent need of a fire station considering that the more than 5,000 mostly wooden houses there could easily be razed to the ground if there is a fire.

Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie said a house in Kuala Matu Hilir, which was burnt to the ground on Monday, could have been saved had there been a fire station there.

"Fourteen people from three families (Ahmad Zaidi Bahni, Abdul Aziz Basah and Abdul Ghani Basah) living in the house are left with nothing apart from what they are wearing now. The nearest fire station is in Mukah.

"The villagers gallantly fought the fire with everything they had including water pumps but to no avail as the fire spread too rapidly.

"But by the time the firefighters reached the scene, there was nothing much they could do. Fortunately, there was no casualty that day," said Abu Seman, who is also a political secretary to the Chief Minister and a Baitulmal director, when visiting the fire victims on Tuesday.

He rushed to the scene immediately upon learning of the incident while attending another function there.

The fire is the first one this year for Matu with a population of about 17,000 people.

"I have brought this matter up several times during the State Legislative Assembly sitting. A piece of land is available for a fire station and it is my hope that Matu will have its own fire station soonest," he said.

He gave out financial assistance to reduce the burden of the affected families, adding that the Welfare Department had also rushed food and cooking utensils to the victims.
