| Call For Scientific Research On <b>Sri Aman's</b> Tidal Bore | MyNewsHub Posted: 02 Jul 2011 01:19 AM PDT SRI AMAN – The Tourism Ministry wants an indepth scientific research of the tidal bore phenomenon or locally knowned as "benak" in Sarawak to be carried out to enhance it tourism potential in the global market. Its Deputy Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit said students either pursuing Masters or Doctor of Philospohy (Phd) in Envorimental Studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) could take the lead by producing a thesis on the Sri Aman tidal bore. "If we knows the exact scientific nature of the Sri Aman tidal bore we can best promote the phenomenon on specific times based on certain market segments like the dare devil surfers from foreign countries,"he said at the launching of 2011 Benak Festival here today. The four-day annual festival was launched by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu representing Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Trudyaib Mahmud. Dawos gave his assurance that he would personally monitor and supervise the research since he was one of the part time lectured at Unimas for the Masters and Phd level studies on the environment. "The tidal bore phenomenon in Malaysia particularly in Sarawak is the only one that exists in the Asean region it should be promoted aggressively,"he said. Meanwhile, Jabu said the state government planned to organise a mini tidal Bore Festival in Betong next year in view of the overwhelming response by local and foreign tourists for Sri Aman's Tidal Bore Festival. "Although the tidal bore in Betong is not as big as in Sri Aman it has potential to be promoted as tourism product,"he said. He said the tidal bore in Betong was suitable for those who are beginners in surfing activities.
