Bidayuh harus terus bersama BN : my Sarawak – News coverage ...

Stay with BN, Bidayuh community urged : my Sarawak – News ...

UNITED WE STAND: Manyin (fourth left) leads the Bidayuh VIPs in giving the 'thumbs-up' during a photo call at the dinner.

KUCHING: The current 'best ever political situation' for the Bidayuh community can continue if Barisan Nasional wins in all the three Bidayuh-majority parliamentary seats in the coming general election.

Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin, who said this, was referring to the present situation whereby the Bidayuhs now have two federal deputy ministers, a full minister, two assistant ministers and a deputy Speaker at the state level.

The three parliamentary seats are Mas Gading, Mambong and Serian. The six state seats are already under BN.

Manyin cautioned that even if one of the three parliamentary seats were to fall to the opposition, there was every likelihood that the status quo of posts for the community in the government would not be maintained.

"Today, even the opposition, they said this is the best time for Bidayuhs in politics. We have three MPs, and two of them are deputy ministers and one is chairman of the National Service Training Council.

"Is this not the best? Have you ever seen this before? No. So, if we want to maintain the status quo, we have no choice. All the six state seats are already won by BN. So, for the three parliament seats, we need to make sure the seats are going to stay with BN (in the coming election)," he said when officiating at the 'Udung Bidayuh' dinner at Kampung Sinjok near Siburan last Saturday.

The dinner was also attended by all the nine Bidayuh elected representatives, Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) president Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, DBNA branch leaders and community leaders. There were about 700 guests at the dinner held at the village's community hall.

Manyin, also DBNA chief advisor, said the 'Udung Bidayuh' or Bidayuh forum dinner at Sinjok was the second in the series of dinners to be organised in preparation for the coming election. The first one was in Bau last February 27, while the third and last one would be held in Serian on May 5. Manyin believed the election would be in June.

On the Udung Bidayuh, he said it was exclusively for the three MPs, six assemblymen and two political secretaries to the chief minister to sit down and discuss issues concerning the Bidayuh community.

Formed in 1997, he said the Udung Bidayuh had significantly reduced friction and politicking among the Bidayuhs, who despite their small population of 200,000 are members of all the four BN components namely PBB, SUPP, PRS and SPDP.

He mentioned that the friction was so bad at one time that the members of a BN component did not want to help another BN component.

On a related matter, Manyin also spoke of his dream to see that Bidayuhs tear down their regional and dialectical differences one day and accept each other in line with the '1Bidayuh' spirit he had always propagated.

"We don't talk of personal differences, regional differences, but we think of the bigger issue that is the Bidayuh community as a whole. It should not matter whether that person is from Jagoi, Singai, Lundu, Krokong, Singai, Padawan, Penrissen, Bukar or Sadong.

"One day, any Bidayuh, no matter from which region, can stand in any Bidayuh area and be accepted by the Bidayuh. That is my dream. Meaning that a person from Serian can stand as a candidate in Tasik Biru, Tasik Biru people can stand in Mambong, and likewise elsewhere.

"If that dream is realised, then we have achieved the 1Bidayuh target," he said. Earlier, during his speech, Manyin surprised everyone by calling Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe not a 'former MP but still a serving MP', in reference to his partyless status ever since his membership was terminated by SPDP.

Mambong MP and Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit and organising chairman Temenggong Datu Stephen Jussem also spoke during the dinner themed 'Bipekat Ata Bake, Brekang Ata Remah' (United We Achieve A Lot, Divided We Achieve Nothing).
